How to setup OpenDNS Family Shield

Posted on July 16, 2014 By David Kittell

Wouldn’t it be great to have a “set it and forget it” option for family internet protection?

OpenDNS has created such a service for free called Family Shield with a simple message: “Pre-configured to block adult content. Set it and forget it. Free.”

Please review the full details at OpenDNS’ Family Shield page: http://www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/parental-controls/opendns-familyshield/

Whether you are on a windows computer or other system you will need administrator permissions to make this change.

These instructions (from OpenDNS) will show you IP Addresses 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222 which is their default DNS IP Addresses.

In order to use their Family Shield, you will need these IP Addresses 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123

For those that know how to use command line take a look at my post “Network Connection Configurations” for the syntax
