What You Can Do With the App
My Location Details can help you:
- View your current GPS location.
- See latitude, longitude, altitude, heading, speed, address, and region details.
- Save places with a name, category, notes, coordinates, date, and optional photo.
- Organize places into categories.
- Search, sort, and filter saved locations.
- View saved places on a map.
- Open saved places in supported navigation apps.
- Import and export saved locations using CSV files.
- Store photos with saved locations.
- Sync saved location data through iCloud when enabled on your device.
- Check weather alerts through an external source after you confirm that you want to send your current coordinates for the lookup.
First Launch
When you first open the app, it may ask for permission to use your location.
For the best experience, allow location access while using the app. This lets the app show your current coordinates, save your current location, calculate distance to saved places, and center maps near your current position.
A good first setup is:
- Allow location access when prompted.
- Open Settings in the app.
- Choose your preferred coordinate format.
- Choose which details you want shown in the Saved Locations list.
- Add or manage categories you want to use.
- Save your first location from the current GPS screen or from the Saved Locations screen.
Location Permission
Location access is important for many of the app's features.
When location access is allowed, the app can:
- Show your current GPS coordinates.
- Save your current location.
- Show distance from your current location to saved places.
- Center maps on your current position.
- Help check weather alerts for your current area after you confirm.
When location access is denied, the app can still show and manage locations you already saved or imported, but current-location features will be limited.
If location access is denied, the app will explain that location features are limited and provide a button to open the app's Location Settings. From there, you can allow location access.
To manually change location permission:
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Scroll to My Location Details.
- Tap Location.
- Choose While Using the App.
Main App Areas
The app is organized into several main areas:
| Area | Purpose |
|---|---|
| GPS / Current Location | View live GPS details from your device. |
| Saved Locations | Search, filter, sort, view, edit, import, and export saved places. |
| Map | View your current location or saved locations on a map. |
| Settings | Customize coordinate formats, saved-list details, map options, categories, and app behavior. |
The exact tab names may vary slightly by app version, but the main functions are the same.
Live GPS Details
The live GPS area shows information reported by your iPhone, such as:
- Latitude
- Longitude
- Altitude
- Heading or compass direction
- Speed, when available
- Address or region, when available
- Coordinate formats selected in Settings
GPS accuracy depends on your device, location permission, signal strength, nearby buildings, weather, and whether you are indoors or outdoors.
For the best accuracy:
- Use the app outdoors when possible.
- Wait a few seconds after opening the app.
- Keep location permission enabled.
- Avoid relying on GPS altitude as a precision surveying measurement.
Saving a Location
You can save a location from your current GPS details or by adding a new saved place manually.
When creating a new saved location, the app uses a draft first. This means a blank saved location is not added automatically. The location is only saved after you tap Save.
To save a location:
- Open the current location screen or the Saved Locations screen.
- Tap Add or Save Location.
- Enter a location name.
- Confirm that at least one location-specific value is filled in, such as latitude and longitude or another supported coordinate value.
- Optionally choose a category, add notes, and attach a photo.
- Tap Save.
If a name or usable location value is missing, the app will ask you to add the required information before saving.
Saved Locations
The Saved Locations screen is where you manage your saved places.
From this screen, you can:
- View all saved places.
- Search for a place.
- Filter by category.
- Sort the list.
- Add a new place.
- Import locations from CSV.
- Export locations to CSV.
- Manage categories.
- Open a saved place for more details.
- Delete saved places.
- Open directions in supported navigation apps.
The recommended toolbar layout is:
| Button | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Add | Create a new saved location draft. |
| Filter | Show all locations or only locations from a selected category. |
| Sort | Change the order of the saved locations list. |
| More | Access import, export, category management, and other actions. |
Searching, Sorting, and Filtering Saved Locations
Search
Use search to find saved places by information such as:
- Name
- Category
- Notes
- Address
- Coordinate details
If no results are found, the app will show helpful options such as clearing the search or changing the filter.
Filter by Category
Use the Filter button on the Saved Locations screen to show:
- All categories
- A single selected category
- Uncategorized locations, when available
Filtering is designed to be forgiving. For example, extra spaces or capitalization differences should not prevent a category from matching.
Sort
Use Sort to change how saved locations are ordered. Depending on the app version and settings, sorting may include options such as:
- Name
- Category
- Date saved
- Distance from current location, when available
Saved Location List Display Options
You can choose what appears in each saved-location row from Settings.
Available row display options may include:
- Category
- Distance from current location, when available
- Coordinates in your preferred coordinate style
- Short address
- Date saved
- Photo thumbnail, when a photo is attached
To customize saved-location rows:
- Open Settings.
- Find the Saved Locations display options.
- Turn individual row details on or off.
For a simple list, show only the name and category. For field use, turn on distance, coordinates, short address, date saved, and photo thumbnails.
Viewing a Saved Location
Tap a saved location to open its details.
A saved location may include:
- Name
- Category
- Coordinates
- Address or region
- Date saved
- Notes
- Photo
- Map preview
- Navigation options
- Sharing options
From the details screen, you can usually edit the location, open it in a navigation app, share it, or delete it.
Editing a Saved Location
The edit screen is organized so the most common fields are easy to find.
Common fields may include:
- Name
- Category
- Primary coordinates
- Short address
- Notes
- Photo
Advanced location details may be grouped in expandable sections. This helps keep the screen easier to use while still allowing access to detailed coordinate formats when needed.
To edit a saved location:
- Open Saved Locations.
- Tap a saved place.
- Tap Edit.
- Make your changes.
- Tap Save.
After saving, the app may show a brief confirmation instead of interrupting you with a large alert.
Categories
Categories help organize saved places.
Examples of useful categories:
- Home
- Work
- Travel
- Hiking
- Camping
- Field Notes
- Radio
- Rest Areas
- Favorites
- To Visit
You can use categories to filter the Saved Locations list and make large location collections easier to manage.
Category management is available from Settings and may also be available from the Saved Locations More menu.
Common category actions:
- Add a new category.
- Rename a category.
- Delete a category.
- Assign a category to a saved location.
- Filter saved locations by category.
Maps
The app can display locations on a map. Depending on your settings and app version, you may be able to choose between Apple Maps and MapLibre.
Maps can be used to:
- View your current location.
- View saved locations.
- See where a selected place is located.
- Open directions in a supported navigation app.
Map accuracy depends on the map provider, GPS accuracy, and the saved coordinate values.
Offline Map Areas
When using MapLibre, the app may offer an option to download the visible map area for offline reference.
Important expectations:
- Offline downloads require internet access at the time of download.
- Only the visible map area is downloaded.
- You may need to zoom and position the map before downloading.
- Downloaded map detail depends on the available map tiles.
- Offline maps are for reference and may not include every road, trail, label, or recent map change.
- Apple Maps offline map behavior is controlled by Apple Maps, not by this app.
Before relying on offline map areas, open the area while you still have internet access and confirm that the map detail you need is visible.
Directions and External Navigation Apps
The app may allow you to open saved locations in supported navigation apps installed on your iPhone.
Supported options may include:
- Apple Maps
- Google Maps, when installed
- Waze, when installed
Only apps that are available on your device will appear as options. Directions and routing are handled by the external navigation app you choose.
Weather Alerts
The app can help you check weather alerts for your current location using an external weather-alert source.
Because this requires your location, the app will ask before sending your coordinates outside your phone.
Weather alert flow:
- Tap Check Weather Alerts.
- The app explains that your current coordinates will be sent to an external source for the lookup.
- Choose Continue to open the external alert source.
- Choose Cancel if you do not want your location sent.
If you cancel, your location is not sent for that weather-alert lookup.
Weather alerts depend on external data availability and may not be available for every location.
Photos
You can attach a photo to a saved location.
Photos are useful for:
- Remembering what a place looked like.
- Documenting a site.
- Adding visual context to a saved point.
- Identifying landmarks, signs, parking areas, trailheads, or equipment locations.
The app stores a resized version of the image with the saved location data. This helps keep storage and sync more efficient than saving full-size original camera images.
iCloud Sync
When iCloud is enabled and the app is configured for iCloud sync, saved location data can sync across your devices signed in to the same Apple ID.
Synced data may include:
- Saved locations
- Categories
- Notes
- Coordinates
- Saved-location photos
- Other saved-location details
For iCloud sync to work:
- You must be signed in to iCloud on your iPhone.
- iCloud Drive and app data syncing must be allowed in iOS settings.
- The app must be installed on devices using the same Apple ID.
- Sync may take time depending on network conditions and iCloud availability.
If data does not appear immediately on another device, wait a few minutes and make sure both devices have internet access.
Importing Locations from CSV
CSV import lets you bring location records into the app from another file.
To import locations:
- Open Saved Locations.
- Tap More.
- Choose Import CSV.
- Select the CSV file.
- Review any import summary or duplicate warning.
- Confirm the import.
The app may detect possible duplicates and summarize how many records were imported or skipped.
CSV import is useful for:
- Moving data from another app.
- Restoring exported data.
- Loading a prepared list of places.
- Sharing location lists between devices or users.
For best results, make sure your CSV contains clear names and coordinate values.
Exporting Locations to CSV
CSV export lets you keep a backup or use your saved locations in another app.
To export locations:
- Open Saved Locations.
- Tap More.
- Choose Export CSV.
- Share, save, or send the exported file.
CSV export is useful for:
- Backing up saved locations.
- Opening location data in a spreadsheet.
- Sharing a location list.
- Moving data to another mapping or GPS tool.
Keep exported CSV files private if they contain personal or sensitive locations.
Sharing Location Details
You can share a current or saved location with others.
Shared information may include:
- Name
- Coordinates
- Address or region
- Notes, depending on the share option
- Map link, depending on the share option
Before sharing, review the details and make sure you are comfortable sending that location information.
Settings
Settings let you customize how the app works and what information it shows.
Common settings include:
Coordinate Displays
Choose which coordinate formats are visible in the app. Depending on the app version, options may include:
- Decimal degrees
- Degrees, minutes, seconds
- Maidenhead
- MGRS
- UTM
- Other supported coordinate styles
Saved Location Row Details
Choose which details appear in the Saved Locations list:
- Category
- Distance
- Preferred coordinate style
- Short address
- Date saved
- Photo thumbnail
Map Provider
Choose the map provider used inside the app, when multiple options are available.
Categories
Add, rename, delete, or manage location categories.
Import and Export
Access CSV import and export options.
Appearance and Units
Depending on the app version, Settings may include display, measurement, or appearance options.
Privacy
The app is designed to keep saved location information under your control.
Important privacy points:
- Saved locations are stored on your device.
- When iCloud sync is enabled, saved data may sync through your Apple iCloud account.
- Photos attached to saved locations are stored with saved-location data.
- Your location is not sent to the external weather-alert source unless you choose to continue after the warning.
- If you cancel the weather-alert warning, your location is not sent for that lookup.
- External navigation apps receive the destination only when you choose to open directions in that app.
- CSV files you export may contain sensitive location data, so share them carefully.
Location data can be personal. Avoid saving, exporting, or sharing sensitive places unless you are comfortable doing so.
Temporary Data Mode
In rare cases, the app may have trouble opening its normal saved-data storage. If this happens, the app may show a temporary data mode warning.
The warning may offer options such as:
- Export Existing Data – Save a copy of your existing data if available.
- Retry – Try opening normal storage again.
- Continue in Temporary Mode – Continue using the app temporarily.
Temporary mode means changes may not be saved after the app closes. Use it only when necessary, and export important data when possible.
Troubleshooting
